Flop Strategies for Omaha Holdem

Anyone who wants to be a successful Omaha Holdem player must learn the strategies for playing the flop. Unlike in Texas Holdem where taking the pots pre flop is common, in Omaha the outcome is usually decided with the cards on the table face up.

Of course, the first thing that you need to know when you hit the flop is if your hands actually have any value. This will not be a problem if you play in a tight aggressive manner. This means of course, that you are selective with the cards that you play with.

A fact that your Omaha Holdem strategy will have to consider also is that a lot of the time your hand will be made before the river. This is not a hard and fast rule of course, but it happens quite often. Therefore, when you have a made hand on the flop, your objective should be to manipulate the money being put inside the pot.

What this basically entails is that your Omaha Holdem strategy for playing the flop must also include managing the pot. A rule that most players follow is that because the hands are made before the river, you should have put as much money as possible in the pot before the final card is turned up.

Again this is situational; if you feel you have the nut hand before the river you should try to get your opponents to put in as much money as you can. Otherwise, play on.

Here the advantage of playing with select hands becomes obvious. If you only play good hands, you will be able to bet and raise a lot. In a loose game this will translate into action, and encourage the other players to put their money in as well.

One other thing that you will have to remember about playing the flop in Omaha Holdem is not to rely too much on the A2 or A3. They are important hands no doubt, but they are easily duplicated and you could end up betting a lot of money only to find yourself being quartered. You might consider playing other hands like A23 or other such pairs.
